Behind Swiss EP

Swiss EP was created thanks to the Economic Cooperation and Development division at Switzerland's State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO). SECO initiated the idea, commissioned feasibility studies by JAA in 2014, and mandated Swisscontact and JAA in 2015 to implement Swiss EP in six countries, with Kosovo joining in 2019.

SECO was the first mover in this niche of private sector development, funding an innovative program that supports startups and ecosystem development, drawing a clear differentiation in approach, effectiveness, and systemic impact.

All organizations involved are on a joint learning journey, focusing on what entrepreneurs in emerging markets truly need to succeed.

SECO

The Economic Cooperation and Development division is part of the State Secretariat of Economic Affairs (SECO). It contributes to achieving the strategic objectives of Switzerland’s foreign economic policy. The division engages with many partner organizations at a bilateral and multilateral level, thereby using the expertise on economic and trade policy within SECO and the Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER). It uses this knowledge in specific areas of development cooperation, for instance, in the fields of economic, trade, and labor market policy.

Swisscontact

Swisscontact is an independent non-profit development organization established in 1959 by representatives of the Swiss private sector and civil society. The work focuses on private sector-led, sustainable economic development and improved quality of life for all in developing and emerging countries. A key focus is to strengthen the skills of individuals and foster the competitiveness of businesses.
